Our first NUBIAN!!

Last weekend was the Memorial Weekend Show in Rocky Mt. We had a great time and brought back two new goats!
The first was a Nubian doeling-Frog Flat Amazon Lily.
I've been wanting a Nubian for a long a time and I was finally able to bring one home!!!:stars:
She's very sweet and her ears are adorable:love:
I would never switch breeds but it can't hurt to have a couple Nubians can it?

2015 Merry Oaks Kids

Figured I would take up blogging again in my spare time. Wait...what spare time? On a dairy goat farm that is pretty much nonexistant...

In 2014 we added 3 Alpine goats to our herd. Sweet Flowers Clematis, Busy B&D Amanda's CL Adonis and Busy B&D Dolly's Della. Adonis is the sire of all of our 2015 Alpine kids.

                                                                    Adonis
And his dam, Amanda.

Our first 2015 kid was a little Recorded Grade doe kid, Merry Oaks California Dreamin', born to our Recorded Grade yearling FF, Merry Oaks Sunny's SilverBirch
Dreamer has now been sold. Thanks Hannah!
Our 2nd 2015 kid was a surpise Nigerian dwarf buckling from LittleFlowers Rebekah.
Six Star Farm Rising Phoenix
After the February kids, I  had a little more than a week break before the March kids hit. On March 8 Tansy and Sunflower delivered their kids. I came home from church to find a big single DOE with Tansy!! Merry Oaks Twist & Shout. Since Twist is most likely Tansy's last kid I'll be retaining her. Just a few hours later, Sunflower delivered triplets- two bucks and a stillborn doe.
The first buckling, Merry Oaks Hard Day's Night.
Second buckling
Several days later, on the 13th, I came to the barn in the morning to find 2 more bucklings!
Emerald's boys, TNT and GimmeBackMyBullets.
I was hoping for a doeling out of Emerald so I could see the improvement Adonis made on some of the "not-so-good" does in our herd. But I might have been tempted to keep one, so it's probably good she didn't
Della was looking very close to kidding Saturday, so I moved her into the kidding pen and got ready to deliver kids. Della is half sister to Adonis(same sire) and I was really looking forward to seeing their kids and Della's 2nd freshening udder. Della had twin does!!! A Cou Blanc and a Chamoisee. I recently clipped them for the Spring Show and I'm really pleased with how they're turning out, especially Bam.
Merry Oaks CallMeTheBreeze
Merry Oaks Sweet Home Alabama
On Monday we were blessed another set of twin DOES from Oreo!!
Swamp Music is turning out very nicely and I will be selling her but I'll see her every year when she returns for breeding, it will be nice to see a couple of Adonis's kids doing well in other herds.

I couldn't be more pleased with how Tokyo Rose is turning out!
Very long and level with nice strong pasterns.
This last set of twin does finished our first group of Alpine does, with 3 more due March 31.
Our other ND doe Iris, was due sometime in March, I wasn't completely sure of the date.
I noticed her udder filling and on the 22nd I came over to feed kids and found her licking off triplets! I picked all 3 of them up and brought them into the milk room, after examining them, I found they were ALL DOES!! 2 were already reserved, and Cocoa and Mocha now live at ShapeEcoFarm
The smallest one, Loretta will be staying here for now.
Just 4 days after Iris gave us triplet does, Spruce started to loose her ligaments, signaling tome that she was close to kidding. I clipped her udder and moved her into the kidding pen, and she finally kidded the next afternoon...A single buckling!
Spruce is a tiny doe and she had a hard time getting him out even though he was only 5 lbs.
Mr. Moonlight will be going with Swamp Music to his new home in June or July.
3 days later, right on her due date Poppy had her kid. What is it with all the singles this year?
She is such a drama queen! She thought she was going to die, but she is fine and gave us a beautiful black buckling. I was disappointed she didn't give me a doe but Helter Skelter is turning out really nicely. I wanted to retain him but I want to avoid linebreedi
Clematis was the only doe left to kid and I was REALLY hoping for a doeling from her.
We were blessed with a gorgeous chocolate Cou Blanc doeling!

Our final kid for 2015 is 18-11 does and 7 bucks.
Kidding season went really fast, now it's almost time for the annual NCDGBA Spring Show.

About Merry Oaks Farm

As we live and work on our family farm here in NC we strive to bring glory to God through the breeding of our dairy goats.
We work hard to be good stewards of the animals God has given to us and it is a great priority to us to keep our goats in good health and excellent condition.
Proverbs 27: 23-24 Be diligent to know the state of your flocks, And attend to your herds;
For riches are not forever, Nor does a crown endure to all generationsProverbs 27:27 There will be enough goats' milk for your food,  for the food of your household and maintenance for your girls. We are a family owned farm that raises Alpine dairy goats for milk. We also enjoy showing our goats and we are working to improve our herd.

How We Raise our Goats
Kids are separated at birth and  raised on lambar until 3 months of age. Doelings are bred at either 7-9 months of age and 80 lbs or as yearlings. From April to September (approximately, sometimes shorter, sometimes longer) We have plenty of pasture, so our goats do not get hay. We believe it is much, much healthier(and cheaper!) to have them on pastures as opposed to eating hay. When there is not enough grass and browse we feed good quality Coastal hay free choice.
In the past year I have experimented with different feed brands and mixing our own feeds but we went back to our original Blue Seal Feed. I highly recommend this feed for milking does! Our does' production skyrocketed, some even doubling, when I switched them back to Blue Seal 20% protein feed.
GOATS FOR SALE
DOELING AVAILABLILTY
Because we are still growing our herd and need replacements for some of the lower quality and older does, we have a very limited number of doelings for sale. We are breeding 8 Alpines for 2016 so we should have a few doelings available next year. I like to sell doelings through reservations only so later this year I will open the waiting list for 2016 Alpine doelings.
BUCKLING AVIALBLILTY
I usually have registered buck kids available from a few does. I have one junior herd sire available out of Poppy.
WETHER AVAILABLILTY
Wethers, or castrated males, make great pets or can be trained as pack goats or cart goats.
We have several of these available each year.
MILKING DOES
We usually have a few milkers available each year. Reservations are full for 2015 milkers. I have a Recorded Grade milker that will be for sale $250 and an Alpine 2 year old that may be for sale also $250. If you are interested in a milking doe next year please let me know and I'll put you on the waiting list.
